Welcome to the transformative journey of parenthood! The postnatal period, spanning the first 6-8 weeks after birth, is a crucial phase that requires thoughtful care and attention. As a family doctor with a passion for supporting new parents, let's explore the principles of postnatal care designed to guide and empower you through this incredible journey.
Continuity of care:
Postnatal care is an extension of the support you've received throughout pregnancy, labour, and birth. Tailored to meet your individual needs and preferences, this care aims to create a nurturing environment where families are guided in caring for their baby and themselves. Recognizing and responding to any deviations from the norm is a fundamental aspect of this care (NICE 2006; updated 2015).
Midwifery support:
Midwifery care plays a crucial role during the postnatal period. Depending on factors such as physical, emotional, social, or psychological risk, women may receive midwifery care for varying durations. In the absence of concerns, it's anticipated that women may transition to the care of their GP and Health Visitor within the first 10-14 days after birth.
Home-based support:
Assuming all is well with both mother and baby, discharge to the care of the community midwifery team typically occurs within 6-24 hours post-birth. This team will provide ongoing support in the comfort of your home. The first community postnatal visit, conducted by a midwife, is crucial. During this visit, you'll collaboratively plan further care visits based on your unique needs.
Communication is key:
Effective communication is at the heart of postnatal care. Plans for care should be well-coordinated among professionals involved in your and your baby's well-being. If you ever have questions or face emergencies, you'll be provided with contact information to ensure immediate assistance.
Your questions matter:
If there's anything on your mind that isn't covered here, don't hesitate to reach out to your midwife for additional information. Your journey into parenthood is unique, and we're here to support you every step of the way.
Congratulations on the newest addition to your family, and welcome to the world of parenthood!
